The black panther is not a distinct species but a term used to describe melanistic (black-coated) large cats, most commonly leopards (Panthera pardus) in Asia and Africa or jaguars (Panthera onca) in the Americas. Their black colouration is caused by a genetic mutation called 'melanism', which results in an overproduction of dark pigment.
Despite their dark coat, the rosettes or spots characteristic of leopards and jaguars are often visible under certain lighting. They are elusive and rarely seen in the wild, adding to their mystique.
A mixed media painting using watercolour paint on Strathmore Mixed Media vellum surface paper (300 gsm), coloured pencils and charcoal.
Dimensions: 22.9 x 30cm (9 x 12 inches).
