The trapping of animals with snares is a widespread issue globally, especially in Africa. Local bush meat hunters often use snares to capture antelopes and other food sources, but this method also unintentionally traps young gorillas, leading to their death. According to the Dian Fossey's Gorilla Fund's Karisoke Research Centre, in 2012, researchers witnessed a remarkable event where two four-year-old gorillas cooperated to remove snares from Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, just days after a young mountain gorilla was killed by a poacher's trap.
This artwork originated as abstract paint splatters on paper. The vibrant hues evoked thoughts of gorillas in my mind, leading me to search for the perfect reference photo. I came across a juvenile gorilla, which did not have a snare in its mouth at the time. Utilizing my artistic abilities, I incorporated my vision and creativity to include the snare element. The eyes are rather cheeky don't you think?
Giclée prints are printed digitally at a high resolution onto archival watercolour paper using pigment based inks which increases their lightfastness.
